About the fishing here
The Vindel river runs 453 kilometres from the mountains in Arjeplog down to the Ume river just east of Vännäsby, and is Sweden's largest tributary. Parliament made it a national river in 1993 and Unesco a biosphere reserve in 2019, Vindelälven-Juhtatdahka. Salmon and sea trout reach it through the fish ladder at Stornorrfors, extended to 300 metres in 2010, and the rapids give stream fishing for grayling and trout while the slow reaches between them hold pike, perch and burbot. The water level can vary by up to eight metres over the year, more than any other Swedish river, so check the flow before you go.
Popular catches here include Northern Pike, Brown Trout, Whitefish, Atlantic Salmon, Burbot and European Perch.
For Northern Pike, the fishing tends to peak around Apr-May, Sep-Oct. The best windows are usually dawn and dusk.
A fishing permit (fiskekort) is required here. Napp ranks the species above from the live weather, water temperature, season and time of day, so the order changes through the day.

About this water
The Vindel River is a river in northern Sweden. It is a tributary to Ume River and the biggest tributary river in Sweden. It lends its name to the Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve, one of the largest protected areas in Europe, totaling 562,772 ha. Since it is partially located within the reserve, it is permanently protected from hydroelectric development. Downstream from Vännäsby, where the Vindel merges with the Ume River, Sweden's largest hydropower plant is located.
