About this water
The Berkeley Pier is a closed municipal pier in Berkeley, California, on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. Built by the Golden Gate Ferry Company in 1926 for automobile ferry service between Berkeley and San Francisco, it originally extended about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) westward from the foot of University Avenue toward deep water in the bay. The pier formed part of the Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental highway in the United States, and later U.S. Route 40, before the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge displaced the ferry route in 1937.
