Whitefish fishing

Coregonus lavaretus

About Whitefish

A silvery salmonid that eats invertebrates. Best fishing during the autumn spawning run. In October and November it moves onto shallow stony shores and reefs, and that is the short window when it is within reach of a shore angler. Because it feeds on insect larvae and small crustaceans, the hooks and flies that work are much smaller than they look right. Through the ice a tiny jig fished slowly is the standard method.

Typical size: Usually 30-45 cm. Record (approx.): ≈ 4 kg.
