Skipjack Tuna fishing

Katsuwonus pelamis

About Skipjack Tuna

The skipjack tuna is a small, fast schooling tuna that hunts in surface-busting feeding frenzies over baitfish and is common off the Portuguese coast. It hits casting jigs, metal slugs and small trolled lures fired into a working school, fighting hard for its size with deep, dogged runs. Watch for diving birds and surface splashes, which mark feeding schools you can run to and cast at.

Typical size: Commonly 1 to 5 kg; trophy fish over 8 kg. Record (approx.): approx. 15 kg (varies by ocean).
