Vendace fishing

Coregonus albula

About Vendace

A small, silvery salmonid that shoals in open water and feeds on zooplankton. Its roe is the prized 'löjrom', best fished during the autumn spawning run. It is a hard fish to catch on purpose, since a plankton feeder ignores most lures, but a string of tiny flies or hooks fished deep from the ice takes them when a shoal moves through. Look for the shoals suspended well off the bottom on the sounder rather than sitting down in it. Most of what reaches a table is netted rather than rod caught, and the Kalix roe carries a protected designation of origin.

Typical size: Usually 12-20 cm. Record (approx.): ≈ 0.3 kg.
