This payara species is the slender, sabre-toothed predator of Amazon and Orinoco tributaries, hunting baitfish in turbulent runs below rapids. It hits fast-retrieved spoons, swimbaits and live bait, often launching clear of the water on the strike. Expect missed hooksets from its hard, bony mouth and the dramatic fangs that give it its vampire reputation.
