About Murray Cod
Australia's iconic apex freshwater predator, the Murray cod is a huge, long-lived ambush fish that holds tight to snags, logjams and undercut banks in the Murray-Darling river system. It hammers big lures, surface baits, spinnerbaits and live bait, often at dusk and after dark, then powers straight back into cover. Use heavy gear and a tight drag, and handle these slow-growing giants with care for release.
Typical size: Commonly 50 to 90 cm; trophies over 1.2 m and 30 kg. Record (approx.): approx. 113 kg (varies by region).
