This South African mudfish is a bottom-grazing member of the carp family that vacuums algae, detritus and small invertebrates from the beds of rivers, dams and slow pools. It has a downward sucker-like mouth, so small baits and worms fished hard on the bottom are most effective. It tolerates murky, silty water well and is a steady, scrappy fish on light bottom tackle.
Typical size: Commonly 25 to 40 cm; larger fish to about 50 cm. Record (approx.): approx. 3 kg (varies by region).
