About Mangrove Jack
A red, snub-nosed snapper of mangrove creeks, estuaries and reefs, the mangrove jack is a brutal ambush predator that explodes on bait then bolts straight back into snags. Young fish hold in skinny mangrove and estuary water; bigger ones move out to reefs and structure offshore. Fish lures, live bait and soft plastics tight to roots, rocks and timber with heavy leaders and a locked drag.
Typical size: Commonly 30 to 55 cm; trophies over 70 cm and 8 kg. Record (approx.): approx. 12 kg (varies by region).
