About Machaca
A silvery, hard-fighting Central American characin, the machaca is famous for slamming surface lures and even taking fruit and seeds that fall into jungle rivers. It is a brilliant light-tackle and fly target, hitting poppers, small spinners and dry flies with sudden aerial strikes. Fish shaded pools, current edges and beneath overhanging trees, especially when fruit is dropping.
Typical size: Commonly 25 to 45 cm; larger fish to about 60 cm. Record (approx.): approx. 3 kg (varies by region).
