About Lake Whitefish

A cool, deep-water member of the salmon family, the lake whitefish roams northern lakes feeding on insect larvae, small molluscs and zooplankton near the bottom. It has a small, soft mouth, so finesse jigging with small spoons, tiny jigs tipped with larvae or maggots, and a light touch is needed to hook and hold them. It is a popular hard-water target through the ice in winter.

Typical size: Commonly 35 to 50 cm; trophies over 60 cm. Record (approx.): approx. 6 kg (varies by region).
