About Japanese Eel
A nocturnal, snake-bodied migrant that grows in rivers and estuaries before spawning far out in the Pacific, the Japanese eel is fished mostly at night on the bottom. It hunts worms, small fish and crustaceans by smell, so cut bait or worms on a simple ledger rig in slow, muddy water works well. Fish around dusk and through the night when it leaves cover to feed.
Typical size: Commonly 40 to 70 cm; large eels to about 1 m. Record (approx.): approx. 2 kg (varies by region).
