About Iwana Char
Known in Japan as iwana, this white-spotted char haunts the cold, clear headwaters of mountain streams and is a classic target for tenkara and fly anglers. It is opportunistic and aggressive, taking drifting insects, small fish and terrestrials in fast pocket water. Stalk pools carefully, as these fish are wary in low, clear flows.
Typical size: Usually 20 to 35 cm; large stream fish to about 45 cm. Record (approx.): approx. 1.5 kg (varies by region).
