European Flounder fishing

Platichthys flesus

About European Flounder

A flatfish that lies on sandy bottoms in shallow bays through summer and autumn. It hunts by feel and smell rather than sight, which is why a slowly dragged bait beats a fast lure every time. A simple bottom rig with lugworm, ragworm or a piece of shrimp, moved a metre at a time, finds them. Late summer into October, in a metre or two of water off a sandy beach, is the reliable window.

Typical size: Usually 25-40 cm.
