About Bocachico
The bocachico is a migratory, bottom-grazing characin of northern South American rivers, with a small downturned mouth used to scrape detritus and algae from the riverbed. It is mainly a commercial and subsistence fish caught in nets during its mass spawning migrations, but anglers take it on tiny baited hooks with dough and vegetable baits near the bottom. It is hugely important to river communities, and its seasonal runs are a major event in the local fishing calendar.
Typical size: Usually 0.3-1 kg; trophies over 2 kg, to about 50 cm. Record (approx.): approx. 2 kg (varies by region).
