About Bluefin Trevally
The bluefin trevally is a strikingly marked, blue-finned reef jack of tropical Indo-Pacific and Red Sea waters, a fast, aggressive predator that hunts over reefs, drop-offs and sandy flats. Anglers catch it casting and retrieving metal slugs, stickbaits and poppers, jigging near reef edges and trolling small lures along the coast. It strikes hard and runs straight for the reef, so anglers fish heavier leaders and lock down to keep it out of the coral.
Typical size: Usually 1-4 kg; trophies over 8 kg, to about 1 m. Record (approx.): approx. 10 kg (varies by region).
