About Black Carachi
The black carachi is another small native pupfish-relative of Lake Titicaca and the high Andes, slightly larger and darker than its kin and an important traditional food fish. It lives in cold, weedy, high-altitude lake margins and is taken mostly in nets and with simple baited hooks rather than as a sport target. Like the other Orestias carachis, it is valued for surviving in harsh, oxygen-thin altiplano water where few other fish thrive.
Typical size: Usually 10-18 cm and under 150 g; large ones to about 22 cm. Record (approx.): approx. 0.25 kg (varies by region).
