The barbel is a powerful, streamlined river fish of British and European waters, named for the four sensory barbels around its mouth and most at home in clean, gravelly, fast-flowing rivers. Anglers target it with feeder and ledger tactics using pellets, boilies, luncheon meat and worms fished hard on the bottom, often in weir pools and over gravel runs. It is famous for an explosive, bottom-hugging fight that tests tackle, making it one of coarse fishing's most respected quarries.
Typical size: Usually 1.5-4 kg; trophies over 6 kg, to about 80 cm. Record (approx.): approx. 8 kg (varies by region).
