The Australian bass is a hard-hitting native sportfish of eastern Australian coastal rivers and impoundments, spending most of the year in fresh water and dropping to estuaries to spawn. Anglers love it for aggressive surface strikes, casting topwater lures, spinnerbaits, small hardbodies and soft plastics tight to snags, weed and overhanging cover. It punches well above its weight, diving instantly for structure, which makes accurate casting and a quick lock-up essential.
Typical size: Usually 0.5-1.5 kg; trophies over 2.5 kg, to about 55 cm. Record (approx.): approx. 3 kg (varies by region).
