The Atlantic wolffish is a fierce-looking, blunt-headed bottom dweller of cold North Atlantic reefs and rocky seabeds, armed with strong canine and crushing teeth for eating shellfish and urchins. Anglers take it on baited bottom rigs over hard ground, often as a prized bycatch while fishing for cod and other groundfish off Norway and Iceland. It does not run far but bites and twists savagely, and the powerful jaws demand respect when unhooking.
