About Atlantic Tarpon
The Atlantic tarpon is a giant, silver-scaled inshore gamefish of warm Atlantic coasts, flats, lagoons and river mouths, and an air-gulper that can roll at the surface. Anglers sight-fish it on flats and channels with flies, soft plastics, swimbaits and live bait, watching for rolling or laid-up fish. Hooking one triggers towering, head-shaking jumps and long screaming runs, and because the flesh is little valued, tarpon are almost entirely catch-and-release.
Typical size: Usually 20-50 kg; trophies over 90 kg, to about 2.4 m. Record (approx.): approx. 100 kg (varies by region).
