The African red snapper is a heavy, reddish reef and estuary fish found along West Africa's coast, often pushing well up into brackish river mouths. It is a prized inshore catch taken on live or dead baits fished near rock, wreck and structure, and on slow-jigged metals close to the bottom. Big specimens fight with strong, dogged dives toward cover, so anglers fish stout tackle to turn them.
Typical size: Usually 3-10 kg; trophies over 20 kg, to about 1 m. Record (approx.): approx. 25 kg (varies by region).
