About African Pike
The African pike is a slender, toothy ambush predator of southern African rivers and floodplain lakes, unrelated to true pike despite the resemblance. Anglers target it casting and retrieving spinners, spoons and small minnow plugs along reed edges and over submerged structure, often as bycatch when fishing for tigerfish. It strikes hard and makes short, violent runs, and its bony, sharp-toothed mouth makes a wire trace useful.
Typical size: Usually 0.5-2 kg; trophies over 3 kg, to about 70 cm. Record (approx.): approx. 4 kg (varies by region).
